Pre-Procedure Consultation

You will have a comprehensive eye examination, including corneal topography, a computerized photographic instrument to map the shape of your cornea.

You will then be shown a videotape, which will go over in detail about the Laser Vision Correction. Finally, you will once again meet with Dr. Kim and discuss any questions that you may have.

Our goal is to make sure that you fully understand all aspects of Laser Vision Correction before you leave the office. The entire consultation will take about one hour. Obviously, there is no obligation to move forward with the procedure if you have decided that Laser Vision Correction is not what you expected.

Laser Procedure

There are things to note before your procedure:

	It is normal to feel a mixture of both eager anticipation and nervousness
	No soft contact lenses for full two days prior to your surgery date
	No hard or gas permeable contact lenses for two weeks or longer
	No eye makeup on the day of procedure
	Wear comfortable clothing on the day of procedure
	No restrictions on eating or drinking but avoid things that may cause drowsiness
	Bring a driver with you or arrange for public transportation on the day of procedure

On the day of the procedure, if you have not previously completed all your testing and preparation,
you will be asked to have a number of routine eye tests and sign a consent form.

Afterwards, you will be escorted to a laser suite, given several different eye drops including numbing
medication, and positioned to a reclining chair under the laser. An eyelid speculum will be placed on
your eye to prevent you from blinking. You may feel a little pressure but no pain.
Your vision will become dark temporarily for a few seconds while a corneal flap is created using a microkeratome.
You will then be asked to stare at the red fixation light while the laser is applied to the cornea beneath the flap.

The laser application time in most cases will be less than one minute. The flap will then be repositioned,
and your eye will be left for a few minutes to ensure the tight sealing of the flap.
The entire procedure will take about 10 minutes.

Post-Procedure Care

Once your procedure is completed, you will be able to go home almost immediately. You will be asked to take an antibiotic and steroid eye drops for the next 5-7 days.
There are certain activity restrictions after the procedure:

	Avoid swimming, hot tubs, or whirlpools for one week
	Wait one full day before taking a shower and try to keep your eyes closed in the shower for one week
	Avoid rubbing your eyes and keep eyeshields at bedtime for one week
	Avoid eye makeup, gardening and dusty environments for one week
	Do not exercise for one week
	Sunglasses should be worn for the first few days
	Avoid contact sports that could result in an eye injury for one month
	Smoking is allowed but you may probably find smoke very irritating
	Read or watch TV in moderation for a few days

It is important for you to remember that follow-up care is as important to your results as the actual procedure.
You will be asked to make post-procedure appointments at 1 day, 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months,
and 12 months after the procedure.
Each appointment should take approximately 5-15 minutes.
